  1. International symbol of socialism. In France
  2. it was used as a revolutionary emblem from
  3. 1792 onward, and was adopted officially as
  4. its flag by the Paris Commune of 1871. Since
  5. the revolution of Nov 1917, it has been the
  6. national flag of the USSR; as such it bears a
  7. golden hammer and sickle crossed, symbolizing
  8. the unity of the industrial workers and
  9. peasants, under a gold-rimmed five-pointed
  10. star, signifying peace between the five
  11. continents. The British Labour Party anthem,
  12. called `The Red Flag', was written by Jim
  13. Connell in 1889.
